How To: Disable iMessage in iOS 5

by Jonathan 8. November 2011 13:56

At least several people have ended up at this blog because they were searching for a way to disable iMessage.  I recently warned about iMessage's fallback to SMS, with the end-point being that such a fallback should be disabled.  Some people wish to disable the use of iMessage completely.  I think that disabling iMessage entirely is a bit extreme, and while I haven't yet thought of a usage scenario to suggest that one stop using iMessage (feel free to comment below!), especially with the consideration that iMessage uses very small amounts of data and, in contrast, text messages are quite expensive, I will provide the instructions to disable it in this post.

First, load the "Settings" app on your iPhone, and select "Messages":

Next, tap the word "On", to the in the "iMessage" column, to move the slider from the "ON" position:

When you are done, the slider next to "iMessage" should read "OFF", as seen below:

And that's all!  Note that to re-enable iMessage, simply slide the iMessage slider back to the "ON" position (you will need to accept the data use warning, and you may need to re-enter your Apple ID password, if you use iMessage through your Apple ID as well as phone number).

My iPhone 4s is paired with my Sync system but I can not hear over the speakers. There was an area I could choose to have iPhone play thru speakers but that has disappeared. My phone calls always show in privacy and I can not choose anything different.

Innovators like Steve Jobs certainly changed the way the typical people perceive technology. In regards to smartphones, like Android, BlackBerry or iPhone, I'm sure most people do not even come near to working with the functionality the phone features.  I wonder if the designers separate it right down to demographics, such as, so many people use a camera, such and such a percentage use the internet, or they simply throw as much at it as they can.

Great Movie! And James Was Terrific as always. But I Still Think That They should have kept the Alternate Ending (deleted scene) .

Do you think developers for example Motorola Android, BlackBerry or Apple iPhone, are really interested in consumer behavior; or they merely make what they can and hope for the best.  Game Changers like Steve Jobs certainly changed the way the typical consumers use stuff. I do believe most people do not even come near to using the functions the device features.  I wonder whether or not the big cell phone makers  break it right down to demographics, like, so many people use a camera, such and such a share use the web, or they merely toss as much at it as they can.
