How To: Disable "Send As SMS" when using iMessage

by Jonathan 25. October 2011 11:27

Update: I recently blogged about disabling iMessage. To view that post, see: Disabling iMessage.

One important thing to remember when using Apple's iMessage in the recently-released iOS 5 is that, by default, your iPhone will fallback to SMS if the iMessage service is unavailable during a conversation with another iOS 5 user. While this may not matter much if you're chatting with another iPhone user in your country and you both have text messaging plans, if you text message any iOS user in another country, I strongly recommend disabling this option. Why? Because if your conversation falls back to SMS, then you will be charged for that international text message by your operator, and the fees are generally quite heavy (generally about $0.25/message, depending on the operator).

In this post, I will provide an example what you will see if you drop back to SMS from iMessage, and show you how to disable this option. Note: Disabling the option to "Send As SMS" does not affect regular SMS messaging, as far as I can tell. It should only stop your iPhone from sending an SMS in place of an iMessage, in the event that the iMessage service is for some reason unreachable when you're already in an iMessage discussion.

Above: A message sent as an SMS after it failed to send through iMessage.

To disable this option, load the "Settings" app on your iPhone, and select "Messages":

Now, tap the slider by "Send As SMS" and ensure that it is turned OFF.

NOTE: In my testing, this still does not work as well as we might expect/hope. My test message with data disabled in an iMessage conversation did not seem to send (though it did not error out, and did eventually send when data was re-enabled), however, when I closed the Messages app and reopened it, the text bar went from "iMessage" to "Text Message", and did send a new message as a text message without any other notification. Bottom line: Still be very careful when using iMessage with someone overseas!

General comment: with the technology of the 3rd millennium it may be possible to show the WHITE subtitles NOT IN THE WHITE bottom part of the pictures, rather on top, which is mostly dark.
Boring technical inadequacy!!!!
Dr. Mikes

Innovators like Steve Jobs certainly changed the way the average consumers perceive technology. When it comes to cell phones, such as Android, BlackBerry or iPhone, I do believe most people don't even come close to working with the features the phone includes. I wonder whether or not the producers break it right down to demographics, like, so many people use the digital camera, such and such a share search on the internet, or they only toss as much at it as they can.

Do you think developers for example HTC Android, BlackBerry or Apple iPhone, pay attention to user behavior; or they simply manufacture what they can and hope for the best. Guys like Steve Jobs certainly changed how the typical consumers use stuff. I believe many people don't even come close to using the abilities the phone features. I wonder if the big mobile phone makers separate it down to demographics, as in, so many people use a digital camera, such and such a portion use the internet, or they just throw as much at it as they can.

From what we've seen, in the future, websites will matter much less and the collective reviews of friends matters much more. Gone are the days where corporate advertising causes the greatest influence. You're absolutely right it makes things tough for advertisers but I really see this as a good thing because if you can properly harness social advertising, much greater results can be achieved with much less effort.

Because lots of comments, particularly on blogs, are incognito folk are more likely to draft the honest truth. Tell them precisely what the problem is and how it can be addressed.

Are you familiar with the actual legal ramifications that would prevent sprint from doing so, or can u "imagine" there would/should be something of the sort. However, i read today that in the contract between apple and verizon specifically states that there is NO exclusivity to their iphone 4. Also verizon was DENIED when apple was asked to specifically exclude sprint from iphone4. Also i guess i mainly disagree because if there is nothing stopping the lawsuit of unlocked tmobile iphone 3gs soley because of sim card compatabilities, why make issue now? especially since apple dev team may have known already(since theyre soooo great lol) that theyre precious phone can and will potentially be unlocked. if ppl buy phone apple gets paid, so y sue a potential profit. please tell me your take on my opinion
